Harp Program

Description

About this series:

Enjoy the healing power of music & friendship in this supportive group led by Music Therapist Lisa Stine & Certified Music Practitioner Laura Caravello where you will learn to play the harp. And when we say "play", we really mean it! They create a relaxed, joyful, and encouraging environment where Lisa explains that, “the harp is truly a magical instrument – even simple tunes are fun, and nothing sounds bad on it." Research has shown that cancer patients engaged in music therapy experience a decrease in anxiety, depression, pain and fatigue. And if you are someone who may find yourself questioning if you can play the harp, the answer is "YES YOU CAN!".

This group is for anyone affected by cancer including patients, survivors, caregivers and family. For the duration of the 8-week program, each participant will be loaned a small Celtic harp to play at home and with others in class. No musical experience is necessary & all are welcomed. The group will meet every Tuesday for 8 sessions total. (Session Dates: 6/11/24 - 7/30/24)

Our classes and programs are funded by grants, sponsors, donors and clients who are paying it forward. Cancer can be expensive; we do not want finances to be a barrier to accessing our valuable programming. Pay-as-you-can with a suggested donation amount per class of $10-$25.

About the Instructors:

Lisa Stine is a music therapist who attended Ohio University and completed her internship at Napa State Hospital here in California. She has enjoyed working with people of all ages, skill levels, and disabilities. Lisa, a breast cancer survivor herself, established the Harp Therapy Support Group at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital in Grass Valley 24 years ago. This continuously ongoing weekly program has had many cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers come together to experience the joy of playing the harp. Some of the group members give back by playing their harps in the local hospitals, nursing homes, and community centers creating a beautiful cycle of healing.

Laura Caravello is a Certified Music Practitioner who trained with the Music for Healing and Transition Program. She graduated in 2008 and has been providing live therapeutic music to patients in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, memory care facilities and patients on hospice since graduation. Laura has played the harp for over 20 years and has experienced first-hand the healing power of music.
